Albania is having its tourism moment — Ksamil, Berat and Tirana are no longer secrets. But step 30 km off the main roads and you'll find places where you might be the only foreigner of the day. Here are eight of our favourites, all reachable by rental car from the standard tourist routes.
1. Lake Koman — the Norwegian fjord of the Balkans
A 3-hour ferry through a flooded glacial valley with cliffs rising 1,000 metres on either side. The road from Shkodër to the Koman dam is itself an adventure (lots of tunnels, narrow bends), and the ferry continues to Fierzë where you can pick up a minibus to Valbona. You can drive your rental to the dock and leave it for the day — it'll be there when you come back.
2. Përmet & the Vjosa river
The Vjosa is one of the last truly wild rivers in Europe — recently protected as Albania's first Wild River National Park. The town of Përmet is the gateway: rafting in summer, the steaming Bënja thermal baths by an Ottoman bridge, and the Langarica canyon a few kilometres upstream. A rare Albanian destination that's still mostly local.
3. Apollonia archaeological park
An ancient Greek city of 60,000 people that the world has somehow forgotten about. Apollonia was where Octavian (later Emperor Augustus) studied; today it's a sprawling site of temples, agora, theatre and a Byzantine monastery — and you'll typically have it to yourself. 90 minutes south of Tirana on the way to Vlorë; combine with the lagoons of Karavasta.
4. Gjipe beach
The Riviera's worst-kept secret. A small cove with white pebbles, turquoise water and one beach bar, hidden between Dhërmi and Himarë. Park at the top of the cliff and walk down a 20-minute path through wild rosemary. There's a wild canyon behind the beach for an afternoon hike. Out of high season you might be alone.
5. Dardha & Voskopojë — Albania's mountain culture
Stone-built Vlach villages in the eastern mountains near Korçë. Voskopojë was once one of the largest cities in the Balkans, with five universities and 24 churches; today only a handful of frescoed Byzantine churches remain, in a quiet alpine setting. Dardha nearby has Albania's tiny but functional ski resort. Korçë itself is famous for beer, the Old Bazaar, and Albania's best icon museum.
6. Theth — quiet edition
Theth is no longer secret in summer, but go in late September or early October and you can have the valley almost to yourself with autumn colours setting in. Stay in a traditional kulla (defensive stone house), eat freshly caught trout, and hike to the Blue Eye of Theth (a smaller, lesser-known sibling of the more famous Blue Eye in the south).
7. Bënja thermal baths
Free open-air thermal pools next to the 18th-century Ottoman Katiu bridge, in the Langarica canyon outside Përmet. The water is 26 °C year-round; locals come here in winter when steam rises off the surface. Pack a swimsuit and water shoes — the pools have stone bottoms.
8. Lin village on Lake Ohrid
A pencil-thin peninsula sticking into Lake Ohrid, one of the oldest lakes in Europe. The village of Lin has a 6th-century Byzantine basilica with stunning floor mosaics, traditional stone houses, and trout restaurants on the water. Across the lake you can see North Macedonia. Combine with the bigger town of Pogradec for an easy two-day eastern detour.
How to reach them
None of these are easily reached by bus — many require a rental car or a private driver. They slot naturally into the standard Albania itinerary:
- Apollonia + Karavasta: 1-day side trip from Tirana on the way south.
- Gjipe: 30-minute detour during the Riviera road trip.
- Përmet + Bënja: full day inland on the way between Gjirokastër and Korçë.
- Korçë + Voskopojë + Dardha: 2-day eastern loop from Tirana via Pogradec.
- Lin + Pogradec: easy day from Korçë; can be combined with North Macedonia.
- Theth: 2 days from Shkodër by SUV; book accommodation early.
- Lake Koman ferry: 1 day from Shkodër; arrange the ferry the day before in summer.
A "hidden Albania" 5-day extension
If you've already done the standard Tirana–Berat–Riviera route and want to come back for the second time, here's a 5-day "best of the rest" loop:
- Tirana → Shkodër → Lake Koman ferry → back to Shkodër (1 long day).
- Shkodër → Theth (2 days, hike to the Blue Eye and the waterfalls).
- Drive back to Shkodër, then south to Korçë via the Ohrid lake road (1 day, sleep in Korçë).
- Korçë → Voskopojë churches → Përmet → Bënja baths (1 day, sleep in Përmet).
- Përmet → Tirana via the Vjosa valley (1 day).
